01 · Beyond GDP

The number that runs the country.

It counts what is bought.

It cannot see a life.

It decides everything anyway.

GDP tells us how much is being bought and sold. It does not tell us whether anyone is living well. Yet it sets the terms of every budget, forecast and headline.

What it counts

Every purchase counts.

A weekly shop. A house being built. A hospital appointment. Activity registers in the total whether or not it improves anyone’s life.

Care is counted as spending. Recovery is not.

03

What it cannot see

One figure. Everything it cannot see.

The things that decide whether a life is good never appear in the total. They are not unknown. They are simply not counted.

Housing

Whether a home is within reach

Money

Whether it lasts to the end of the month

Health

Whether people are actually getting well

Fairness

Who is gaining, and who is falling behind

Environment

What is being depleted to produce growth

Time

Whether people have time to live

A rising average can hide a falling life.

04

The proposal

Keep the statistic. End its dominance.

01

A new index, published in the open.

The outcomes that decide a life — measured honestly, released in full, and open to revision.

02

Broken down by place and income.

No national average to hide behind. Borough beside borough, household beside household.

03

Tested by people who do not answer to us.

Independent scrutiny, published method, and a clear route to challenge any finding.

What gets measured gets defended.

05

What comes next

Measure what makes a life.

Health.

Housing.

Security.

Opportunity.

Safety.

Environment.

Outcomes published openly, broken down by place, with the list left open to revision. A London pilot is planned, with the method released in full, including what it cannot yet measure.

A country is not an economy.

Growth is a means, never the end. Change begins by choosing, in public, what counts as progress — and holding the people in charge to it.

How we would get there

SocialJustice.org.uk

Everyone should live a good life.

An independent, non-party public-interest platform dedicated to informing, educating and preparing the public for potential systemic change. It is not a political party.

The public commitment

We explain proposals without hiding uncertainty, disclose the status of tests and approvals, correct errors, welcome serious criticism, and distinguish what is intended from what has actually been achieved.

Facts are dated and sourced. Projections are not guarantees. All unimplemented actions are described as proposals or intentions.
